Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed - A Tale of Valour, Bravery & Fearlessness

Biography:- Muhammad Mahfuz was born in Pind Malkan, district Rawalpindi on 25 October, 1944. He had a very brave, dignified and confident personality. He got his early education from the primary school of his village. Muhammad Mahfuz was fond of swimming and kabaddi since his childhood and was known in the surrounding due to Kabaddi. He remained the captain of the Kabaddi team of his village. He became interested in joining army due to the stories of his grand father Gulzar Khan. He listened to stories told by his grandfather about the WWI, WWII and of Muslim generals and being impressed by these stories he joined army on 25 October, 1962 and was appointed in 15 Punjab Regiment on 8 May, 1963 at Quetta.
A Tale of Bravery & Self Sacrifice:- Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz No. 2222519, was LMG operator in the platoon no. 3 of the Alpha Company. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, 15 Punjab (33 Muhammadi) was part of 10 Division and was deployed at Lahore / Wahgah front. On the night of 17 December, a company of 15 Punjab was ordered to attack the village of Pul Kanjari, which was in the enemy area and a company of enemy was deployed there. The enemy has strongly fortified this place for its defence. Due to some reasons the attack was launched a little later than the decided time. In the meanwhile due to light the enemy was firing effectively at our company. It was such a situation that a little movement meant instant death. Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz did not lose courage at this moment and continued his fire against the enemy. In the meanwhile a shell of the enemy exploded near Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz, many shrapnels hit his body and his machine gun also was knocked out. At a distance of 3 yards a comrade of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz, who too was a machine gun operator laid martyred and his machine gun was lying nearby. Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz crawled towards it and started firing on the enemy with this LMG. During this he saw that from the trenches of the enemy a machine gun is terribly and effectively firing towards us. He crawled towards this pillbox, from a distance of about 10 yards، he rose with a slogan of Allahu Akbar and ran towards the position of the enemy and Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz took hold of the machine gun operator from his neck. Two other enemy soldiers attacked Mahfuz with bayonets. But this lion heart soldier did not let the enemy go until he killed him. Due to injuries Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz embraced martyrdom and even after his martyrdom the enemy could release the neck of their companion with difficulty. During all this battle the commanding officer of 3 Sikh Light Infantry, colonel Puri who was present in the forward trenches and had seen all the brave action of Mahfuz. After the ceasefire, when the bodies of the martyrs were being retrieved, the enemy himself brought the body of Lance Naik and the commanding officer admitted (praised) the bravery of Mahfuz in the following words:
"During my entire service I have never seen a soldier more brave, had he been a soldier of Indian Army, I would have recommended him for the highest military award."
Hence, on 23 March, 1972, Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz was rewarded with the highest military award Nishan-e-Haider by the government of Pakistan, post martyrdom. The following officers of the 15 Punjab regiment paid their respects on Mahfuz Day on 18 December, 2008.

My friend and colleague in Al Kass Sports Channel, Sherjeel Masoom straightened the tilted picture of the plaque.

I reached there on one sunny afternoon. The whole areas is very beautiful and even a long drought and dusty atmosphere could not suppress the natural beauty completely. While taking pictures of the tomb a man with pleasant demeanour approached me and introduced himself to be the nephew of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed. His friend and neighbour Muhammad Safeer was also with him.

He informed me that Muhammad Mahfuz was not married. Though he was engaged. He also informed me that Mahfuz had two other brothers and both we re alive. He is son of Sakhawat Hussain, the younger brother of Mahfuz Shaheed. They warmly invited me to have a cup of tea with them, which due to shortage of time I could not accept. Their house is close to the tomb of Mahfuz Shaheed and they also told me that government gave them 75 acres of agricultural land in recognition of his service to the nation. They also invited me to attend a special ceremony to be held after two days on his martyrdom day on 17 December. They were expecting senior military officers to come to lay wreaths on his tomb and offer fateha.  But unfortunately I could not go there again. Mr Faisal can be contacted on the number: +92 342 547 2311.

Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed is one of those people who love their country and in the time of need does not shirk from their duties towards it. And are always ready to give any sacrifice for its security and well being. This great soldier's tomb is very close to Islamabad. One should take his or her children to inspire them and create feelings of patriotism in the younger generation. Schools can arrange a trip to the tombs and monuments of these heroes.

You are welcome to provide any additional information about the life, heroism or family of Mahufz Shaheed.

Grave of Shahamad Khan: Victoria Cross & Order of St. George

As I mentioned earlier in my post on Captain Raja Sarwar Shaheed, NH, the old Rawalpindi division is home to 5 of ten Nishan-e-Haider recipients. Even before the creation of Pakistan, this region was an important source of recruitment of soldiers for the British Indian Army. Hundreds of thousands of them participated in the two world wars and fought bravely. One of them was Shahamad Khan, of Takhti a small hamlet in tehsil Gujar Khan, district Rawalpindi.

On 14 December, after visiting the monument of Captain Sarwar Shaheed NH and grave of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed NH, we reached Takhti in late afternoon. My friend Muhammad Munir was with me during this expedition. He was constantly wondering at me finding this remote place associated with Shahamad Khan, an equally unknown figure in our beloved country.

It was late in the evening and winter sun was setting fast. We hurriedly took some pictures and offered Fateha. It is a very small village and we could see only a few children playing around this small cemetery and two women could be seen busy in evening chores, in a nearby home. People in small villages still take their dinner at the sunset or soon after.

We were about to leave when a man came on a motorcycle, sitting behind a young man. He introduced himself to us and I was happily surprised to know that he was a grandson of Shahamad Khan. His name is Raja Muhammad Riaz son of Raja Muhammad Akram son of Shahamad Khan. We had a little chat with him and he told us that this new monument was erected less then a year ago, close to the centennial celebration of Shahamad's Victoria Cross, by the Punjab Regiment. He did not know who currently had the possession of his Victoria Cross. He has a brother living in Rawalpindi, who has some papers related to Shahamad Khan. His medal is now probably a part of Lord Ashcroft's collection.

The grave of Shahamad Khan is located in Takhti (Takti Rajgan on google earth) at  33°21'32.19"N, 73° 4'12.57"E. About 52 kilometers from the zero point of Islambad, on Rawat - Chakbeli Khan road. A small road leads to Takhti, which is 4 kilometers away from the main  road. But there is a stream near Takhti, with no bridge over it, however it is passable in good weather. The grave of Shahamad Khan is just 500 meters across this stream.

Naik Shahamad Khan: Victoria Cross
Grave of Shahamad Khan: Victoria Cross (14.12.2016)

Naik (Later Subedar) Shahamad Khan
 (1 July, 1879 - 28 July, 1947)
Naik Shahamad Khan (89 Punjabis - Now the 1st Battlation The Baloch Regiment) was commanding a machine gun section within 150 meters of enemy lines in Mesopotamia on 12 April, 1916 during WWI. While fierce enemy attacks managed to penetrate remaining positions of his platoon, Naik Shahamad Khan held on to his position for three hours, beating back three consecutive enemy attacks. He worked his machine gun single handedly when all his men had become casualties and and continued fighting with personal weapon, once his machine gun was knocked out. His absolute determination and courage provided ample time to his comrades for organizing defence in the rear.
After receiving orders for withdrawal, he successfully brought back his knocked out gun, ammunition and one severely wounded comrade. For this most conspicuous act of gallantry, Naik Shahamad Khan was awarded Great Britain's highest military award "Victoria Cross" and Russia's highest military award "Order of the St. George."

As you can read above, Shahamad Khan not only won VC but also the the highest military award of Russia the "Order of St. George". This perhaps makes him  unique in all the Indians who won Victoria Cross. But I could not find any reference of his getting Order of St. George, anywhere else.

No. 1605 Naik Shahamad Khan, Punjabis.

For most conspicuous bravery. He was in charge of a machine gun section in an exposed position, in front of and covering a gap in our new line, within 150 yards of the enemy’s entrenched position. He beat off three counter attacks and worked his gun single-handed after all his men, except two belt-fillers, had become casualties. For three hours he held the gap under very heavy fire while it was being made secure. When his gun was knocked out by hostile fire he and his two belt-fillers held their ground with rifles till ordered to withdraw.
With three men sent to assist him he then brought back his gun, ammunition, and one severely wounded man unable to walk. Finally, he himself returned and removed all remaining arms and equipment except two shovels.
But for his great gallantry and determination our line must have been penetrated by the enemy.

Muhammad Munir - (14.12.2016)

Me, relaxing and waiting for dinner, at Dhok Budhal - (14.12.2016)

While writing this post, I felt the name of Shahamad Khan curious. I have never heard such a name before and linguistically also it makes no sense. I know from my own experience that village people still pronounce Ahmad as Aamad. And we are talking about an era almost a century and half old. So in my opinion it is quite possible that his name was Shah Ahmad Khan (شاہ احمد خان) and not Shahamad Khan. So somebody at some stage wrote his name as he heard and understood and those spellings stuck on. But, my friend Munir contacted Raja Riaz his grandson and he said that the name was indeed Shahamad Khan (شہامد خان).

I shall wait for your comments and will welcome any contribution on this topic. I still cannot find the battle and its location, where this incident happened on 12 April, 1916. At that time a division of British Indian army was under siege at Kut Al Amara, Iraq, which surrendered on 29 April, 1916 and all the persons were taken prisoners. But Raja Riaz told my friend Munir that his grandfather was not taken prisoner. So may be, he along with his unit was deployed somewhere else. My friend Munir not only accompanied me on my visit to Takhti, but also contacted Raja Riaz to make some enquiries on my behalf. Similarly my friend Omar Haroon, living in San Francisco, helped me in correcting a grammatical mistake (just one little mistake).

The second question is more intriguing. What he is today for us? A hero or just a mercenary? After all on 12 April, 1916, when he was manning his machine gun, Muslim soldiers of Ottoman Empire were on the receiving end. What was he thinking while fighting his own fellow Muslims? It is well known that Muslims soldiers were having a very uneasy conscience due to this fact. A man is product of his time, and so they were too. We cannot judge them a century later, living an altogether different circumstances. They made their choices and fulfilled their commitments. Shahamad Khan too was such a person, who enlisted in the army due to his own reasons and when the time came he did not wavered. That is the most important thing. Now that generation has passed away. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Tomb of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Janjua Shaheed: Nishan-e-Haider

December 14, 2016, was a lucky day for me, because on this day I visited two of the ten recipients  of Nishan e Haider, the highest military award of Pakistan. After visiting the monument of Raja Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, a couple of hours earlier, I reached Dhok Nishan e Haider, the village of Sowar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Nishan e Haider, just 71 kilometers away from the zero point of Islamabad. The tomb is located at  33°11'40.35"N; 73° 3'46.46"E

Sowar Muahmmad Hussain (Shaheed), Nishan e Haider
20 Lancers, Haideri

Sowar Muhammad Hussain was born on 18 January, 1949, in Dhok Pir Bakhsh, Rawalpindi. On 3 September, 1966, he got enlisted in army and got his training as a driver in Armoured Corp. After the completion of his training he was appointed in 20 Lancers.
During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, he participated in every battle of his unit with extraordinary zeal. No matter how dangerous the situations were, he always got hold of a machine gun and started firing on enemy, without a fear of any danger. On 5 December, 1971, at Zafarwal, Shakargar front he kept on supplying ammunition to soldiers in each and every trench, without considering intense and direct fire from the tanks and infantry of enemy. On 8 and 9 December, he accompanied four fighting units in their difficult and dangerous tasks.
On 10 December, when he saw digging trenches in "Harar Khurd" village near our minefield, he immediately informed the deputy commander of the unit and then on his own initiative he went to each and every gun one after the other and corrected their directions and made them fire upon the positions of enemy, resulting in the destruction of 16 of the enemy's tanks. Afternoon at 4 o' clock on 10 December, 1971 when Sowar Muhammad Hussain was showing the positions of the enemy to one of his Recoiless Rifle mounted Jeep, a hail of fire from a machine gun of an enemy's tank, riddled his chest with bullets and he met his True Lord on the battlefield. Sowar Muhammad Hussain has the distinction of being the first soldier to receive Nishan e Haider.
Sowar Muahammad Hussain was associated with 20 Lancers Regiment, which was recorganized under the command of Lietenant Colonel Nasrullah Khan on 20 June, 1956 in Rawalpindi. This unite participated successfully in the defense of Sialkot in the Indo-Pak war of 1965. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971 this unit was deployed in Shakargarh sector. Where this unit fought an exempalry rearguard action and during all the duration of the war, did not let enemy to reach and cut the Shakargarh - Zafarwal road. This unit was named as 20 Lancers Haideri on 24 August, 1976.

Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed was born on 18 June, 1949 at Dhok Pir Bakhsh. He got enlisted in army on 3 September, 1966. After joining the army he gained his driving skills. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971 he served in 20 Lancers. On 5 December, 1971 Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed kept on supplying ammunition to soldiers. On 6 December, 1971 he participated in dangerous tasks of fighting formations. On 10 December, 1971 he saw the enemy digging trenches at the village or Harar Khurd and informed the unit commander. Due to personal efforts of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed 16 tanks of the enemy were destroyed. On same 10 December while attacking the enemy with his recoil less rifle he got martyred in a hail of enemy's fire. On the recommendations of Major Amanullah he was awarded Nishan e Haider.
The name of Sawar Muhammad Hussain's father was Roz Ali and he was a farmer. He got married with Arzan bibi in 1967. Who gave birth to a son and a daughter. It is worth mentioning that during the Indo-Pak war of 1965, was though getting education in Devi High School, but he has great passion in his heart for the love of his country. He got his primary education in the village of Jhang Pheru. He wore Shalwar Qameez and tehband at home. In food he liked mustard spinach, butter and Lassi (yogurt mixed with water),very much.
Martyrdom Of Muhammad Hussain
As per tradition, before leaving for war his father gave him a suit of white clothes. Sawar Muhammad Hussain often mentioned the incident of Karbala and was deeply moved by the courage and bravey of Hazrat Imam Hussain. After his martyrdom a money order of Rs 100 and two blood stained letters were found in his pocket. When his father heard the news of his martyrdom, his first question was" Whether my son had shown any cowardice in the battlefield."
An Incident of Sawar Muhammad Hussain's Honesty
An incident of Sawar Muhammad Hussain's honesty is quite well known. Once a friend of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed gave Rs 200 to his father to keep in trust. In the meanwhile his father got in desperate need of some money. When he mentioned it to Sawar Muhammad Hussain, he said, "That is a trust of someone. However, I have a personal amount of Rs 50, try to manage with that. I shall not give a single rupee out of those 200, because it will be a breach of trust and when I shall be answerable to God, what reply shall I give?

Note: My friend Waseem Ahmad Qureshi, currently residing in Riyadh, helped me a little in translating the above passage (just one sentence to be precise). But as per my commitment, I am bound to write his name in bold letters.

Mr Sohail Warraich of Geo News presenter of famous programme "Aik din Geo ke saath", visited the village of Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed and met his father and son. He produced this programme probably in 2008 and gives a moving account of Sawar Muhmmad and his martyrdom by his father. The video can be seen on the following link:

While travelling in the rural areas of northern Punjab I have often seen boards, indicating towards the graves of martyrs, who have laid down their lives in the ongoing war against terrorism. One such grave I saw at Faraash. It is the grave of a soldier, who got martyred in Kurram Agency. I saw the following board on the road with some details. May the souls of our martyrs rest in eternal peace.

Monument of Captain Raja Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed: Nishan e Haider

Nishan-e-Haider is the highest military award of Pakistan, granted to honour those who show great courage and give supreme sacrifice of giving their life in defense of their country. So far 10 Pakistanis have received this great honour. It is interesting to note that at least seven out of these ten Nishan-e-Haider recipients belonged to an area of erstwhile Rawalpindi Division. Rashid Minhas though was born in Karachi but the homeland of Minhas clan is the same region. So probably 8 had roots in this region. Similarly 3 out of 5 Victoria Cross recipients of the British Army, from future Pakistan region, also belonged to this area.

The first of them, who received this highest award for bravery was Captain Raja Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider. It was a coincidence that when I started visiting the tombs of our heroes, who received NH, his monument was the first that I visited. Before writing his biography and details of his achievements, I would like to inform my readers that Captain Sarwar is on of those two Nishan e Haiders, who are not buried in Pakistan. Captain Sarwar is buried in occupied Kashmir, on Tilpatra hill, west of Uri, very close to Line of Control. I could not find the exact location. So instead of a tomb, army built a beautiful monument to honour him, which is located at  33°24'7.59"N;  73°14'50.35"E.

The other NH who is not buried inside Pakistan is Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, who is buried near Hili in Bangladesh.

Above are a few couplets from the famous poem of Allama Iqbal, Tariq ki dua, i.e prayer of Tariq (Tariq Bin Ziyad) most appropriate homage to shaheeds like Captain Sarwar. For a moment I thought to translate it, but then dared not. Luckily my school buddy Waseem Ahmed, currently residing in Riyadh, (I promised him to write his name in bold letters for his contribution) came to my help and provided this excellent translation, which is given on the following blog:

These   warriors,    victorious,   These  worshipers  of    Yours,
Whom You have granted the will to win power in Your name;

A brief biography of Captain Sarwar is written in Urdu, at the monument: (14.12.2016.)

Captain Raja Muhammad Sarwar Bhatti Shaheed
(First Recipient of Nishan-e-Haider)
He was born on 10 November, 1910, in the village Singhori, tehsil Gujar Khan, district Rawalpindi, in the house of Havildar Raja Muhammad Hayat Khan Bhatti. He was a scion of Rajput Bhatti family. He got his primary education from Government Primary School, Kaliam Awan, district Rawalpindi. He passed his examination of Matriculation from Islamia High School Lyallpur (Faisalabad) in 1928. He enlisted in 2/10 Baloch Regiment as a soldier. Was appointed as Naib Subedar in the Army Supply Corps in 1939. He got his commission in Dehra Dun Academy and was appointed in the Punjab Regiment.
His orderly Jahandad Khan stated that he offered his prayers five times regularly, recited Holy Quran and offering pre dawn prayers was his routine. He spent most of his money in the causes of Allah. No needy person was turned away from his home empty handed. Major Muhammad Afzal and Captain Muhammad Sarwar were serving together in Jhelum Centre at the end of 1946. Aatma Singh was Colonel Commandant, he said to Captain Sarwar that he was he always busy in prayers. Captain Sarwar became angry and said to the colonel "you have no right to speak about my religion and I shall keep on remembering, yes you can tell me if you see any deficiency in performing my duties, so dare not say anything about it."
General Raja Muhammad Jamshed stated: I and Raja Sarwar were captains during the jihad of Kashmir in 1948.One night I saw that he was weeping profusely, after the pre dawn prayers. At the breakfast I ask him what he was praying to Allah about? Initially he was not willing to tell, but on insistence of we companions he informed "I prayed to Allah that I get the  of martyrdom or blessing of performing Haj". Right after seven days Allah granted his prayer for martyrdom.
Battle of Tilpatra, Uri Front: Pakistan came into existence in 1947. But the rulers of India wanted to destroy this Islamic State. So India started its attempt to destroy Pakistan through Kashmir in 1948. Therefore Quaid-e-Azam Muahammad Ali Jinnah declared Jihad in Kashmir and ordered Pak Army to participate in it. Captain Sarwar were participating in a course in GHQ's School of Signals. His unit 2 Punjab Regiment entered Kashmir to face the enemy. As soon as the course ended he persisted to take permission to participate in Jihad of Kashmir, with his unit. In his book Tab o Taab e Jawidana, the ex chairman of Wah Factory, Major General (R), Fazal Muqeem, has described the his passion for participating in Jihad of Kashmir with his unit and his longing for martyrdom. Seeing his determination the commanding officer gave him permission. He was appointed as signals officer. He offered himself to fight the enemy at Tilpatra hill.
On 27 July, 1948, i.e 20 Ramadan, 1337 AH, took his men with him and challenged the enemy. The enemy opened fire with machine guns, artillery and mortars. He kept on advancing bravely. His machine gunner got martyred. He took hold of his gun and sent 40 of enemy's soldiers to hell. When a second gunner arrived he handed over the machine gun to him. He, along with some soldiers, advanced from another side and destroyed a machine gun of the enemy. He got injured during it, but kept on advancing. There was barbed wire, which he cut himself and let the soldiers pass through it and led a final assault on the enemy. During this time, a burst from the automatic machine gun of the enemy pierced his noble chest. He fell down but encouraged his soldiers to fell upon the enemy while reciting the Kalima Tayyiba. After hearing the good tiding of victory, he embraced martyrdom on 27 July, 1948, i.e. 20 Ramadan, 1337 AH. He was buried on Tilpatra hill. May Allah always shower his blessings on his grave. Amen.

In search of some more material, I found some additional information about the life of Captain Sarwar on this website: http://www.urdubiography.com/national-heroes/captain-sarwar-shaheed.html. It is in Roman Urdu (Urdu written in Roman Alphabets), here I have given its transliteration and translation also.

In WWII he rendered great services on Burna Front. Consequently the British Government granted him the medal of Burma Front. In January, 1945, he went to Rawalpindi to attend a signal course. And embraced martyrdom on 27 July, 1948 on the Uri Front. His burial place is on Tilpatra Hill, Uri, Kashmir.
The above passage gives a lot of information about Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, though some events are not in order and some others are not clear.

While visiting the monument, I felt proud and also realized the value of Nishan-e-Haider and the sacrifice of his recipient Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed. The monument itself is very beautiful and set in a very beautiful area. Though due to winter and drought the atmosphere was mostly dry and dusty. I wish more people visit this place, which is just 40 kms away from the zero point of Islamabad i.e. only 17 kilometers from the eastern edges of Rawalpindi city. I watched a documentary programme of ATV, presented by Farah: The youtube link is given below:

At the end I wish somebody could inform the location of his grave and if possible provide pictures. May be somebody could contact his family and take some information from them. I shall be thankful if someone could provide some additional information, especially the location of his grave or suggest some correction.
